Understand Rocky Point's Huge Tides
The Gulf of California is long and narrow, and Rocky Point sits near the northern end. As the tide pushes up the Gulf, the water has nowhere to spread out, so it piles up. Most days have two highs and two lows.
| Term | What it means | Fishing impact |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming (flood) tide | Water rising toward high | Fish move in to feed. Prime shore time |
| Outgoing (ebb) tide | Water falling toward low | Fish pull off flats toward channels and deeper edges |
| Slack tide | Water barely moving at the turn | Usually the slowest bite |
| Spring tides | Biggest swings, around new and full moons | Strong current, big range, careful timing |
| Neap tides | Smallest swings, around quarter moons | Gentler current, easier boat days |
Fish the Incoming Tide from Shore
From shore, the first half to two-thirds of the incoming tide is the classic window. As water floods rocks and flats, baitfish and crabs get stirred up, and corvina, sierra, and other predators follow them in. Start fishing a couple of hours before high tide and keep moving back as the water rises. See our shore fishing guide.
Time Boat Trips with the Tide
- Launches and returns: some ramps go dry at low tide, so captains plan around higher water. If you bring your own boat, read bringing your boat to Rocky Point.
- Moving water on the reef: reef fish often bite best when current is running. On spring tides, current can be strong enough that captains change spots or anchor differently.
- Neap tides for easy days: smaller tides around the quarter moons often mean easier drifts, which can be good for first-timers.

Avoid Tide Mistakes
- Getting cut off. On rocky points and sandbars, the incoming tide can trap you. Always know your way back.
- Stranding a boat. A boat left in shallow water on a falling tide can end up sitting on the bottom for hours.
- Driving on the flats. Trucks and ATVs sink in wet sand, and the water comes back faster than you think.
- Slippery rocks. Rocks exposed at low tide are covered in algae. Wear shoes with grip.
See This Month's Best Fishing Tides
The biggest tides of each month come around the new moon and the full moon. These spring tides move the most water, which is great for shore fishing on the incoming, but they also bring the strongest current and the lowest lows. The quarter moons bring neap tides, with smaller swings and gentler current, which usually makes for easier boat days.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best tide for fishing in Rocky Point?
Many Rocky Point anglers prefer the incoming tide, especially from shore, because fish move in with the rising water. Moving water generally fishes better than slack tide.
How big are the tides in Rocky Point?
Rocky Point has some of the largest tides in North America. During spring tides around the new and full moon, the range can exceed 20 feet.
Do tides matter for launching a boat in Rocky Point?
Yes. Some ramps are unusable at low tide. Plan launches and returns near high tide.
Is outgoing tide good for fishing?
It can be, especially near channels and drop-offs where fish wait for food to wash out. Most shore anglers here still favor the incoming tide.
