Rod and triggerfish caught inshore in Rocky Point, Mexico

Rocky Point Bait and Tackle: Where to Buy and What to Bring

If you are fishing with our partner captains, you do not need to buy anything: rods, reels, tackle, and bait are included. If you plan to shore fish or bring your own boat, bring your rods, reels, and terminal tackle from Arizona, where selection is better, and buy fresh bait in Rocky Point. Below are local shops, a bring-vs-buy checklist, and tips for crossing the border with gear.

Shop These Bait and Tackle Stores

Rocky Point has a working commercial fishing fleet, so the best place for supplies is the Old Port, where the boats dock. Small shops come and go and posted hours are not always reliable, so call ahead, or ask us when you book and we will point you to what is open.

Grocery stores in town also sell ice, and the fish market on the Malecón can be a source of shrimp and squid for bait.

Bring This from Home

For shore fishing:

  • 7 to 9 foot medium spinning rod and reel
  • 15 to 20 lb line, plus a spare spool
  • Fluorocarbon leader and a few short wire leaders for sierra
  • Hooks (1/0 to 3/0), sliding sinkers, swivels
  • Jig heads and soft plastic swimbaits
  • Spoons and small metal jigs
  • Pliers, a knife, a towel, and a small cooler

For your own boat: add heavier conventional gear (30 to 60 lb line) for reef fish, grouper, and yellowtail, plus heavy jigs and dropper rigs.

For a partner charter: nothing. Just bring drinks and coolers. See what to bring on a fishing charter.

Buy This in Rocky Point

  • Bait: fresh or frozen squid, shrimp, and baitfish.
  • Ice: lots of it, for drinks and the catch.
  • Local favorites: ask the shop what is working this week.

Pack Gear for the Border

  • Personal gear is fine. Fishing gear for your own trip is generally no problem crossing either direction.
  • Use rod tubes. Protects rods and keeps the truck bed organized.
  • Keep it reasonable. Large amounts of new, tagged gear can look like goods for resale.
  • Answer honestly. If asked, say it is fishing gear for your trip.
  • Bait coming back: do not bring leftover bait back into the U.S. Use it or toss it.
