Corvina Fishing in Rocky Point: Season, Tactics, and Rules

Corvina are the signature inshore fish of the Upper Gulf of California, and Rocky Point is one of the closest places for Arizona anglers to catch them. They feed over sand and mud near tide changes, so you can catch them from shore on an incoming tide or from a panga over inshore structure. Spring and fall are the best seasons. Corvina have mild white meat that is great in tacos and ceviche.

Know Your Corvina

"Corvina" is the Spanish name for several fish in the croaker family. Around Rocky Point you may hear about:

CorvinaWhat to know
Gulf corvinaFound only in the northern Gulf. Gathers in huge numbers to spawn near the Colorado River delta in spring
Orangemouth corvinaThe largest of the group, with a yellow-orange mouth lining
Shortfin corvinaSmaller, common inshore

All corvina are long, silvery fish with a big mouth and a few prominent teeth at the front of the upper jaw. A large corvina can look a lot like a young totoaba, which is fully protected. If you are not sure, ask your captain before you keep it. See totoaba rules.

Fish the Right Season and Tide

  • Season: spring, roughly March through May, and fall, roughly October and November, are the most consistent.
  • Tide: corvina feed when the water moves. From shore, fish the incoming tide, starting a couple of hours before high. From a boat, captains look for current over sandy and muddy bottom.
  • Time of day: early morning and evening often beat midday, especially as the water warms.

Follow the Regulations

  • Fish from a boat with a valid Mexican fishing license.
  • Follow the daily limit and keep only what you will eat.
  • Gulf corvina are managed under Mexico's NOM-063-PESC-2005, which sets a 65 cm (about 26 inch) minimum size, and a 2005 agreement closes corvina fishing inside the Upper Gulf biosphere reserve from May 1 to August 31 for spawning. These rules are written for the commercial fishery, but anglers should follow them too: release small corvina and leave spawning fish alone. Checked October 2026.

Cook Your Corvina

Simple corvina tacos: Cut fillets into strips. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and a little chili powder. Sear in a hot pan with oil for 2 to 3 minutes per side until it flakes. Serve in warm corn tortillas with shredded cabbage, lime, crema, and salsa. Feeds the whole crew from a couple of fish.

Corvina also makes great ceviche when it is very fresh. Keep it on ice from the moment it comes out of the water.
