Fish These Shore Spots
- Cholla Bay: right by the lodge. Corvina and small reef fish on the incoming tide.
- Rocky points: rock edges that drop into deeper water. Reef fish and sierra.
- Harbor jetty area: deeper water close to the rocks. Access around the working harbor can change, so ask locally before you fish there.
- Sandy Beach: long sandy beach for corvina and occasional halibut.

Fish Inshore by Boat
Inshore reefs about 4 to 15 miles out are where most afternoon and half-day trips fish. Expect cabrilla, sea bass, triggerfish, red snapper, and corvina over nearby sand. Pangas are perfect here. See panga fishing.
Specific reef locations are each captain's livelihood, so we show general areas only. Your captain picks the spot based on tide, wind, and what has been biting.
Head Offshore
- Far reefs, 15 to 30 miles out: larger grouper, snapper, and sea bass on full-day trips. See deep sea fishing.
- Bird Island (Isla San Jorge): sea lions, seabirds, and fishing in the surrounding waters, often for yellowtail in cooler months. See our Bird Island guide.
Know the Etiquette
- Give other anglers space. Do not crowd a spot someone is already fishing.
- Pack out your trash, including line and bait bags.
- Respect private property. Some shoreline access crosses private land, so use public access points.
- Keep only what you will eat and follow daily limits.
- Release protected species quickly. See totoaba rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the best fishing spots in Rocky Point?
Popular areas include Cholla Bay and rocky points along the coast for shore fishing, inshore reefs for panga trips, and offshore islands like Bird Island for full-day charters.
Can I fish from the jetty in Rocky Point?
Anglers do fish the rocks around the harbor, but access around a working port can change. Ask locally before you go, stay off posted areas, and keep clear of boat traffic.
Do I need a boat to fish Rocky Point?
No. Shore fishing works well on an incoming tide, but a panga or charter opens up reefs and offshore species.
Will a captain take me to their best spots?
Yes, on a charter the captain fishes the spots that are producing. Those spots are not published, which is part of why a good captain is worth it.
