Angler with a triggerfish on a Rocky Point fishing charter

How Much to Tip a Fishing Charter (Including in Mexico)

Tip 15 to 20 percent of the charter price, in cash, at the end of the trip. Hand it to the captain to share with the crew, or tip the deckhand directly if he did most of the work. In Mexico, U.S. dollars and pesos are both welcome in Rocky Point. Tip more for a great day, even if the fish did not cooperate, because the crew still worked.

Tip This Much

Trip price15%20%25% (outstanding)
$350 afternoon trip$53$70$88
$600 half day$90$120$150
$900 full day$135$180$225

Split it with the crew. With 6 guys on a $600 half day, a 20 percent tip is $20 each. With 10 guys on a $900 full day, it is $18 each.

Know Who Gets the Tip

  • The captain runs the boat, finds the fish, and is responsible for everyone's safety.
  • The mate or deckhand baits hooks, untangles lines, gaffs fish, and cleans your catch. On many boats, the deckhand earns much of his income from tips.

The simplest way: hand the full tip to the captain and say it is for the crew. If one deckhand went above and beyond, slip him something extra directly.

Tip in Mexico

  • Cash is king. Cards are rarely an option for tips on the dock.
  • Dollars or pesos. Both are welcome in Rocky Point. Pesos are slightly more convenient for the crew, but dollars are fine.
  • Bring small bills. Hit an ATM or bring twenties from home.
  • When: at the end of the trip, after the fish are cleaned.
  • Fish cleaning: on our partner charters, cleaning at the dock is included. If the crew does extra work like vacuum sealing, tip a bit more.

Adjust for Service

Tip more when:

  • The crew worked hard to find fish on a slow day
  • They were great with kids or first-timers
  • They cleaned and bagged a big catch
  • Your group was a lot to handle (be honest)

Tip less only when: the crew was unsafe, rude, or did not try. Slow fishing alone is not a reason. Nobody controls the fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should you tip on a fishing charter?

A common guideline is 15 to 20 percent of the charter price, given in cash to the captain to share with the crew. Tip more for exceptional service.

Should I tip in pesos or dollars in Mexico?

Either is usually welcome in Rocky Point. Cash is best. Ask your captain if you are unsure.

Is the tip included in the charter price?

Usually not. Crew tips are typically extra unless your quote says otherwise.

Do I tip if we did not catch anything?

Yes. The crew still ran the boat, baited hooks, and worked to find fish. Tip on effort and service.
